The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act or Clery Act, signed in 1990, is a federal statute passed in 1990, requires all colleges and universities who receive federal funding to share information about crime on campus and their efforts to improve campus safety as well as inform the public of crime in or around campus. This information is made publicly accessible through the university's annual security report. Public crime and safety information can help with informed decisions when it comes to choosing institutions to pursue further higher education.

Campus Security Authority
The Clery Act designates UNL faculty and staff as Campus Security Authorities (CSAs). This role extends beyond law enforcement to include individuals who may be more approachable for students and other campus community members. The goal is to ensure that those who might be reluctant to report a crime directly to the police still have trusted, university-affiliated individuals they can turn to for support and reporting.
